Trauma-Sensitive Yoga

Trauma can affect both the mind and the body. Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is a trauma-informed, body-based approach that provides individuals with opportunities to reconnect with their bodies, develop a greater sense of agency, and explore movement and breathing in a supportive environment.

TCTSY is different from a traditional yoga class. The focus is not on performing poses perfectly or on what a pose looks like. Instead, participants are encouraged to notice their own internal experience and make choices about what feels comfortable for their body. The power and choice remain with the individual—not the facilitator.

The approach is informed by trauma theory, attachment theory, neuroscience, and Hatha yoga, with an emphasis on movement, breathing, choice, and personal agency. Research has supported TCTSY as an approach for individuals affected by trauma and post-traumatic stress.
